Introducing primary school students to organic agriculture is a fantastic way to build their appreciation for sustainable farming and environmental stewardship. At Msamvu B Primary School, a hands-on lesson recently took place, engaging students in the preparation of a garden plot and planting vegetables.
Preparing the Field
The students started by learning the basics of soil preparation. Under the guidance of FOATZ Field Officer, Mr. Leonard Chapi, they cleared the area of weeds and debris. The class worked together to loosen the soil using hoes and rakes, ensuring it was aerated and ready for planting. Compost and organic matter will be added to enrich the soil, teaching the children about natural fertilizers and their importance in growing healthy plants.
Planting Vegetables
After preparing the field, the students planted a variety of vegetables. They learned about seed spacing, depth, and how to handle delicate seedlings. The Field officer explained the benefits of crop diversity in organic farming, such as pest control and improved soil fertility.
